From the Photographers
Robyn and Colin's story is the kind that makes you believe in the magic of unlikely connections. Set up by their matron of honor Shelby — who met Robyn through an online D&D game — these two started their relationship the way any great love story should: playing 7 Days to Die together across state lines. From a first in-person date at a local brewery to a proposal weekend in Salem, Massachusetts (complete with the Witch House, the House of the Seven Gables, a handmade broom, and a lighthouse on the harbor), Colin has made it his mission to make every hour meaningful — and it shows. For their engagement session at Domaine Pterion, we got to see exactly who Robyn and Colin are: romantic and tender in the golden vineyard light, and completely, unapologetically themselves when the lightsabers came out. Photographer David captured the full range — from a quiet kiss at sunset to Robyn channeling her inner Sith with a glowing red blade — and it was, without question, one of the most memorable sessions we've had the privilege of being part of.
How they Met
Colin and I were actually set up by our matron of honor Shelby. I met Shelby through an online D&D game and she was friends with him from high school! Colin and I were both single pringles so she introduced us. He was living in Missouri at the time so for our first date, we played 7 Days to Die together. The chemistry was instant and we kind of kept that momentum going when we met in-person for the first time. He took me to a brewery for our first IRL date because he knew I loved visiting local breweries!
The Proposal
I’m notoriously hard to keep surprises from, and he managed to do that in large part! I knew the when, but I didn’t know the how. Colin originally told me we were going to the beach, but then surprised me with a long weekend in Salem. I’ve always wanted to go but had never been able to make the time.
We spent the weekend visiting some amazing shops, touring the Witch House and the House of the Seven Gables, and I even got to make my own broom! To round out the trip, he took me to a nice dinner at a restaurant called The Ledger, which was built in the old Salem Savings Bank building circa 1818. After dinner, he took me to Salem’s dwarf-like lighthouse, the Derby Wharf Light Station. He knows I love the water, so he proposed by the lighthouse on the harbor!
The whole weekend was magical. It made me feel seen, heard, and loved. I’m so excited for our future together and to have my forever partner in crime.
Colin - I only had one thought in the back of my mind. I wanted every hour to be meaningful.
Best part of Being Engaged + Some Advice
For me - it's been thinking about our future together and having those thoughts start to become more of a reality. And just enjoying more of the day to day. Yes, wedding planning is fun but this man is able to get me to pause and appreciate the little things in life. I feel so blessed to have him as my partner and protector.
Colin - Just getting to live life and make memories with the someone you know is your person.
I’ve got two main things. First, slow down! It might seem impossible, but try to slow down and enjoy the moment. You only get to do this once, so soak it in and make sure you’re taking time to enjoy your partner instead of launching right into wedding planning.
Second, budget. Come up with a budget, stick to it, and keep your partner looped in on the major steps of planning. :) It might not feel like a big deal to splurge on small decor items or invitation tweaks along the way, but they add up throughout the process. You want to make sure you and your partner are on the same page.
